DV/VA/MD Metro Area: Superintendent
Solicit, interview and select workers for the project including contacting applicable unions to obtain workers for supplemental personnel. Distribute, collect and complete new hire paperwork and forward to HR in a timely manner. Responsible for communicating site rules regarding safety procedures to new hires and enforcing those rules. Superintendents serve as timekeepers or approve time cards for payroll. Must approve track and communicate time off, absences, disciplinary actions and terminations via the Employee Status Change Form. Superintendent must comply with any and all company required reports, attend pre-bid site visits, and be able to provide an employee with correct union contact information for union contract related questions. Superintendents must also be familiar with each labor contract to ensure that violations of the terms do not occur.
Superintendents typically supervise foremen, who in turn supervise the workers. On smaller sites, the superintendent may be the manager who instructs the workers directly. Supervision might involve assigning workers to specific jobs, providing training for new hires or directing workers on the order of tasks to be performed. Regardless of the level of direct supervision provided, it is the job of the construction superintendent to inspect work performed by all employees, and sub-contractors on the project.
Superintendents are typically involved in pre-construction estimates if time permits. As the project progresses, they monitor job costs to ensure that they are meeting budget and if not, communicate issues to upper management and determine whether it is possible to make up the difference. Superintendents track the inventory of equipment, supplies and materials to guard against loss and to ensure that critical materials are ordered and delivered to meet schedule.
The construction Superintendent must coordinate the activities of subcontractors, laborers, operators and material deliveries. Superintendents need to communicate with the estimator or engineer who bid the project to address, prevent or remedy any cost over runs or scope changes. Superintendents must plan work schedules so that conflicts do not occur, such as having an operator report before the equipment they are to operate arrives on site.
Superintendent is not an entry-level position. GWP will only accept applicants with adequate experience in track construction or comparable field.
